The Humphrey School offers a number of special opportunities for students historically underrepresented in higher education.
Diversity Days is a two-day program designed to expose students who
are historically underrepresented in higher education to master’s
programs at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
The Humphrey Students of Color Association (HSOCA) serves as a collective voice for students of color at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. HSOCA advocates for positive change for underrepresented and marginalized communities of color and provides a venue to share ideas and work on issues that most directly affect students of color at the Humphrey School.
member of the Sylvia Rivera Society (SRS) advocate for, support, and create a platform for the voices of LGBTQIA students at the Humphrey School. Through a variety of events and activities, SRS addresses queer issues, social justice, and change—both within and beyond the public affairs and policy arena—while emphasizing intersectionality and recognizing the centrality of privilege in systems of oppression. Trans and gender non-conforming students are explicitly included in these efforts.

The University of Minnesota and the Humphrey School offer many merit-based scholarships. Among those of interest may be:
Chutich Family Endowed Fellowship
This scholarship established in 2010 by Margaret H. Chutich and Dr. Penny A. Wheeler will provide funding for graduate students at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs who will increase the diversity of views and experience represented at the School. It honors Joseph Daniel Chutich and his wife, Marlys Morrill Chutich, who were 1950 graduates of the University of Minnesota, as well as their children. The Chutich family believes in the value of education and its power to make positive change in our society, and in offering a quality education to motivated students of all backgrounds and experiences.
DOVE Fellowship
The DOVE Fellowship seeks to assist graduate programs to promote a diversity of views, experiences, and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative excellence. This diversity is promoted through the recruitment and support of academically excellent students with diverse ethnic, racial, economic, and educational backgrounds and experiences. Programs are encouraged to consider students from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the graduate programs.
Krusell Fellowship
The Krusell Fellowship is for Master of Urban and Regional Planning or Master of Public Policy students interested in issues of housing and community development. Over the two years of their academic program, fellows receive a full scholarship, plus three paid fieldwork placements with community agencies. Preference will be given to economically disadvantaged or under represented students who intend to work in the housing and community development field in Minnesota upon graduation.
Martin Olav Sabo Fellowship
This award is for students from historically underrepresented applicant populations with demonstrated financial need who have overcome economic or educational disadvantages to achieve success in scholarship and leadership that will increase the diversity of views and experiences represented in the Humphrey School student body. The award provides a one-year, full-tuition scholarship.
