Prerequisites + Admission Requirements

We expect Master of Development Practice applicants to have:

  • A four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. university or foreign equivalent
  • Competence in college-level algebra (including facility with functional notations; algebraic manipulation of polynomials, logs, and exponentials; and graphic representation of equations)
  • A grade of B or better in an introductory course in microeconomics or general economics course that includes introductory microeconomics. A macroeconomics course will not satisfy this requirement.
  • A grade of B or better in a college level science course that teaches scientific methodology. Examples of possible courses that would fulfill this prerequisite include biology, chemistry, physics, environmental sciences, or ecology.
  • Computer competency in MS Excel and Word
  • English language competence. If English is not your native language, you must pass the TOEFL or IELTS exam with a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), 100 (internet based, minimum 22 on each section), or 7 for the IELTS. TOEFL or IELTS scores must be less than two years old.
  • International professional experience and foreign language competency are strongly preferred
  • Completion of an undergraduate course in political science that analyzes political institutions (state and local, national, comparative, or international) and presents basic concepts in political analysis is strongly recommended

If you have inadequate preparation in these prerequisites but are otherwise qualified for admission, your application still may be considered (at the discretion of the faculty admissions committee), but you will be required to take the relevant courses before beginning the program or taking core courses.

If you have questions about your academic preparation for the MDP program, attend an information session or contact the admissions office at hhhadmit@umn.edu or 612-624-3800.
