The Humphrey School of Public Affairs is the University of
Minnesota's school of policy and planning.


Prerequisites + Admission Requirements

Although you may take one or two program courses before applying for official admission into this certificate program, admission to the certificate program is recommended no later than after completion of the first course.

Prerequisites

To be admitted into the Nonprofit Management certificate program, you must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • A preferred performance level for your undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
  • Documentation of two years of paid or unpaid experience in a nonprofit organization in one or more of the following areas: management of a budget, supervision of staff, development of programs (implementation and evaluation), fundraising, grant writing, regular participation in board meetings and/or on board committees

Once you are accepted into the program, you will receive timely program updates and course registration information along with other admitted student benefits.

Admission Requirements

Special Admission considerations for the Nonprofit Management Certificate include:

  • No Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required
  • Submission of Experience-Paid/Volunteer/Internship-Form

In addition to the items outlined on the Application Checklist, applicants to the Nonprofit Management certificate program must submit the Experience-Paid/Volunteer/Internship-Form to document two or more years of relevant experience. The form may be uploaded to the Graduate School online application.

Applicants should reflect on the following items:

1. Describe what has contributed to your interest in the nonprofit management certificate program
2. Discuss what you plan to be doing in your career in the next two to five years
3. Discuss a current issue in nonprofit management that is of particular interest to you
4. Identify your experience in working with individuals and/or groups who are culturally or racially different than you.
