COMMUNITY

The Humphrey Institute engages and is engaged with the local community in a number of ways. As the public affairs arm of the University of Minnesota, the Institute’s goal is to share research and expertise with individuals, organizations, and communities.

Community Partnerships

Capstone Workshops link students with community clients, offering advanced graduate students with real-world experience working on a client-based project, while offering community organizations a way to meet targeted, practical, applied research needs. Workshops are designed collaboratively between an instructor and client and range in topic from education to economic development to nonprofit management. To learn more, contact Stacey Grimes at (612) 626-1329 or grime004@umn.edu.

CHANCE is a community–University partnership sponsored by the Center for Integrative Leadership. In addition to the Humphrey Institute, the University partners include the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota Law School, University Libraries, Office of Public Engagement, and Office of University Relations. On the community side, CHANCE has on-going and developing relationships with the many community nonprofits and associations, Augsburg College, and Fairview. To learn more, contact Merrie Benasutti at (612) 624-8300 or benas021@umn.edu.

The Jane Addams School for Democracy brings immigrant families, college students, and other community members together to do public work and learning. It is a community-based initiative inspired by the vision of democracy, productive citizenship, and popular education held by settlement house pioneers like Jane Addams, who created Hull House in Chicago in 1889. To learn more, contact Nan Skelton at (612) 625-3003 or skelt003@umn.edu.

The Warrior to Citizen Campaign is a grassroots effort to provide enduring support to Minnesota’s returning veterans and their families. It challenges all Minnesotans to think actively and creatively about how returning veterans can contribute their new skills and insight to our organizations, businesses, schools, local governments and communities—as citizens. To learn more, contact Ellen Tveit at (612) 626-1147 or tvei0002@umn.edu.
