The Center on Women and Public Policy was one of the early participants in an informal consortium intended to coordinate and support higher education programs for research and teaching on women. Academic centers at Hamline, St. Catherine, St. Thomas, as well as the Center on Women and Public Policy and the Center for Advanced Feminist Studies at the University, first collaborated on workshops and public events surrounding the 75th anniversary of American women's suffrage.

The experience was so successful that the consortium decided to continue meeting informally and to expand its participation to include Women's Studies programs at the University, community colleges, and at Metropolitan State University. The consortium meets quarterly during the academic year and members brief each other on program initiatives, potential collaborative opportunities, and ways that members might support one another's programs, or at the very least, not duplicate one another.

During 1996-97, the consortium began looking at student internships which many of the members' programs require. The group explored ways in which colleges and universities might work more efficiently with each other and with nonprofit organizations that serve women. These discussions continue with the objectives of: ensuring quality internship experiences for students, reducing duplication of effort among the various programs, and reducing the demands on nonprofit organizations which currently must respond to each institution separately.
