March 12 International Women's Day
The Center on Women and Public Policy was once again a co-sponsor of The
Eleventh Annual International Women's Day Celebration. For more information

April 21 United Front for Children: Global Efforts to Combat
Sexual Trafficking in Travel and Tourism
The Center on Women and Public Policy was a co-sponsor of this path-breaking
conference put on by the Human Rights Program and the Human Rights Center.
Keynote speakers included Ambassador John R. Miller, U.S. State Department,
Marilyn Carlson Nelson, CEO, Carlson Companies, and Ann Veneman, Executive
Director, UNICEF.

May 17 Women in Public Policy Reflection Meeting
Students concentrating in Women and Public Policy at the Humphrey School
were invited to a year-end reflection meeting with Professor Sally Kenney.
We discussed what worked during the year, ideas about the curriculum,
and thoughts on women and public policy focused programming for next year.
May 30, Humphrey Public Leadership Awards Dinner
The
Humphrey School of Public Affairs honored the recipients of the 2006
Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership Awards at a gala dinner at the McNamara
Alumni Center in Minneapolis. The 2006 Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership
Award winners were George J. Mitchell, Geri M. Joseph, Kathleen Blatz,
and Gary L. Cunningham. Sally Kenney and Amber Shipley, who received recognition
for the Humphrey School Advisory Council Scholarship, attended the
event.
June 9 - 11 DFL State Convention
Melissa
Reed, Carla Pulles, and Amber Shipley, three Humphrey School students,
received funding through the Center on Women and Public Policy to attend
the DFL State Convention in Rochester, MN. Thanks to a CWPP Silianoff
Grant, which supports students who attend professional trainings and conferences,
Melissa, Carla, and Amber spent the weekend learning about the political
endorsement process and meeting fellow Democrats from around the state.

September 10 Dinner with Sally
Women and Public Policy concentrators kicked off the new academic year
with a dinner at Sally Kenney's home. New and returning students ate lasagna,
fantastic desserts, and had a chance to mingle.

October 21-31 Minnesota Political Contribution Refund Contest
The CWPP organized a contest to help get Humphrey students get excited
about Minnesota's Political Contribution Refund (PCR) Program. The PCR
is the cool program that allows MN residents to contribute $50 a year
to a political party or candidate for state office and receive the money
back from the MN Department of Revenue in 6-8 weeks. To participate in
the contest, students had to print out the pledge
form, find 5 MN residents to contribute $50 to a political candidate
or political party of their choice by educating them about the Minnesota
Political Contribution Refund (PCR) Program and providing them with the
refund application form. The contest winners won cool prizes!
October 27 Wilma Mankiller Event
The CWPP co-sponsored Wilma Mankiller's speech about the way Native American
traditions of giving contribute to the values of balance and harmony,
equity and justice. Wilma Mankiller is an author, activist, and former
principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. She has been awarded the Presidential
Medal of Freedom as well as honorary doctorates from Yale University,
Dartmouth, and Smith College. Ms. Mankiller is the author of Mankiller:
A Chief and Her People (St. Martins Press) and co-edited A Reader's Companion
to the History of Women in the U.S. and Everyday is a Good Day.
October 31 Lick Voter Apathy Ice Cream Social
In honor of election day one week away, we held an ice cream social to
help educate students about the candidates and issues they'll see on their
ballot. We provided voting information, endorsement lists, and volunteering
information for the last week of the '06 election cycle. Volunteer coordinators
from the Patty Wetterling campaign were there, and students heard from
Rep. Nora Salwick and Flannery Clark of the Minnesota Women's Campaign
Fund. We also celebrated the winners of the Political Contributions Refund
(PRC) Contest!

November 16, WPP Power Hour Series. Create a Fact Sheet. Spend an hour creating a fact sheet to help “educate the masses.”
November 28, WPP Power Hour Series. Clothing swap. Swap clothes you no longer want and for fantastic new-to-you items. An hour of recycling and community building.
November 30, International Feminist Internship Brown Bag. Students interested in women's issues and looking for an international internship this summer joined the CWPP to learn about international feminist internships and fellowship opportunities. The International Feminist Internship Brownbag featured two second year students sharing about their experiences in international feminist internships as well as a discussion on available internships and funding sources.
December 7, WPP Power Hour Series. Letter writing over beers. Spend an hour writing letters to your representatives, key officials, or organizations that need to hear from you. We'll provide note cards, stamps, and lists of officials so you can focus on writing and sipping your drink. Hump night starts at 9pm at the same bar, so plan to stay on for the festivities.
