Many Humphrey School students have developed successful internships with feminist organizations across the country. Here is a brief overview of some of the host organizations and student experiences:

The Center for Economic Progress (CEP) is an “action tank” located in St. Paul, MN. Its main objective is to study and promote women’s economic issues through the use of research and programming.

Past Intern: Emily Warren
Dates of Internship: Summer 2005
Program of study: MPP - Women and Public Policy

Emily was hired as a project manager for the Center's Earn More, Move Up Project. The objective of EMMU is to produce a research volume that studies the causes for the persistent gender pay differential. She worked with an economist at Hamline University to solicit articles for the volume from those in academia whose research fits in this area. Additionally, Emily helped form a committee who would help to oversee the project by contributing to publicity, fundraising, and planning of a symposium that the CEP hoped to organize after the volume's publication in order to promote it. She attended monthly board meetings and also helped the Center's executive director with other ongoing projects, such as promotion for the Center's Women in Philanthropy event.

The Center for Policy Alternatives is a non-profit, non-partisan public policy and leadership development center devoted to community-based solutions that strengthen families and communities. CPA has several national and international programs. The international program is based on its extensive leadership training and economic agenda framework.

Past Intern: Emari Dimagiba

Program of Study: Public Affairs

Emari assisted in all aspects of fundraising, organizing, communication, and implementation efforts for the 1996 Women's Voices initiative, a national survey coordinated with state specific polls to identify women's key economic, political, and social concerns, and their ideas for solutions. She designed the survey and negotiated with pollsters. She acted as a key contact person for all the state partners who were conducting their own version of the national survey, a responsibility that entailed developing close working phone relationships and communicating information in the most efficient manner. She also helped plan and organize a retreat for about 50 women state leaders and other organizational representatives who took interest in planning the release of the survey results.

Since its founding in 1972 as the nation's first feminist policy research organization, the Center for Women Policy Studies has been on the front lines of efforts to promote justice and equality for women.

Sarah was a research intern and worked on multiple issues. Her main project was helping develop a survey that was distributed to women who had participated in a national women's volunteer organization. This project included performing literature reviews, as well as physically designing the survey. While at the Center, she also did a little research on state legislation regarding sexual trafficking. Graduating from the Humphrey School in 2004, she currently holds a full-time policy associate position at the Center, researching the sexual trafficking of women and girls.

Molly studied the link between substance abuse, child abuse, and domestic violence for the
Children's Defense Fund, Child Welfare and Mental Health Division in Washington, DC She also researched the Medicare and Medicaid rights of grandparents and other kinship care providers, and assisted in organizing a National Kinship Care conference at the Alexander Haley farm.

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition (GenderPAC) works to end discrimination and violence caused by gender stereotypes by changing public attitudes, educating elected officials and expanding legal rights. GenderPAC also promotes understanding of the connection between discrimination based on gender stereotypes and sex, sexual orientation, age, race, class. GenderPAC currently has three advocacy areas: workplace fairness, violence prevention, and youth advocacy.

While at Gender PAC, Amy planned a GenderCONNECTIONS event that took place in Minneapolis in October 2004. To do this, she located and approached sponsors for the event, secured funding, selected dates, and selected venues. She also worked extensively within GenderPAC's youth program, assisting students in their chapters, as well as affiliate organizations with any problems or issues they might have. She performed basic webpage editing and proofreading of press releases. She also wrote and analyzed a number of surveys for their youth program, and also for their workplace fairness program.

The purpose of the Marin Women's Commission is to work to promote equal opportunity, economic independence, and access to resources for Marin County women through advocacy, research and partnership with agencies that serve women. Their duties include: to study problems, consult with the Board of Supervisors, prepare information, advise and counsel residents as well as County, State, and Federal officials concerning matters related to discrimination against women and the violation of women's rights. The Commission may also conduct hearings and recommend improvements in related programs.

Elizabeth worked for the Martin County Women's Commission in Northern California. She completed and analyzed a survey of the salaries paid to Marin County employees by gender and ethnicity. She utilized the county's payroll data to analyze their salaries. Her findings were significant in that women and minorities were systematically paid less on average and they were absent from leadership and high salary positions.

The National Council for Research on Women, founded in 1981, is a working alliance of 84 women's research and policy centers (the Center on Women & Public Policy is one of them) with more than 3,000 affiliates and a network of over 200 international centers. NCRW's mission is to enhance the connections among research, policy analysis, innovative programming on behalf of women and girls.

Kimberlee was responsible for putting together a digest, "On the Cutting Edge: A Digest of the Research and Resources from the Member Centers of the NCRW," which categorized the Council's 92 member centers by current research projects, policy agendas, and research specialties.

According to their website, "the National Women's Political Caucus is a multicultural, intergenerational, and multi-issue grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women’s participation in the political process and creating a true women’s political power base to achieve equality for all women. NWPC recruits, trains and supports pro-choice women candidates for elected and appointed offices at all levels of government regardless of party affiliation. In addition to financial donations, the Caucus offers campaign training for candidates and campaign managers, as well as technical assistance and advice. State and local chapters provide support to candidates running for all levels of office by helping raise money and providing crucial hands-on volunteer assistance."

Program of Study: Public Policy

Quishi worked as a political planning and action intern. He did research on campaigns, candidates, and legislative events, attended public hearings, contacted local caucuses, and helped organizing conferences. He wrote reports on findings and created a policy and procedures manual for NWPC.

Past Intern: Sarah Taylor-Nanista

Program of Study: MPP - Women and Public Policy, MSW - Community Organizing

Sarah's internship focused on campaign work, candidate recruitment strategies, and policy work for Representative Bernardy. For the campaign, she helped to recruit volunteers, created targeted door knocking routes, updated web sites and data bases, and assisted in fundraising efforts. Sarah also assisted the Representative with recruiting and supporting female candidates for elective office, including sitting in on meetings with the DFL House Caucus staff as well as potential candidates. Her policy responsibilities included working with Dave Greeman at the DFL House Research to research and write a policy brief on Emergency Contraception for Representative Bernardy.

SIECUS is a 35-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to affirming that sexuality is a natural and healthy part of life. SIECUS develops, collects, and disseminates information, promotes comprehensive education, and advocates for the right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices.

The SIECUS public policy office, located in Washington, DC, is committed to promoting comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive rights as well as fighting sexual ignorance, censorship, and discrimination based on gender, age, or sexual orientation.

Past Intern: Lynn Bretl
Dates of Internship: Summer 2002
Program of Study: MPP - Social Policy
Salary: unpaid
Funding: $500.00 stipend from the SIECUS for travel

Lynn wrote fact sheets, short articles for Policy Briefs, and other letters/articles as assigned. She also attended committee hearings and briefings on Capitol Hill. For her the real learning from this internship came from listening to discussions with policy staff about legislative and advocacy strategies and just soaking up the environment of a DC policy office.

Past Intern: Rosa Tock

Intern's Program of Study: Master of Public Policy
Salary: $1000.00/month
Languages Spoken: English and Spanish

Rosa assisted the Executive Director and two program coordinators at WISE with the development of two resource handbooks on finance and health insurance addressed to immigrant women and girls. She wrote and edited materials related to finance and insurance and solicited sponsorship from a diversity of institutions. Among the most important of Rosa's achievements during the internship was the development of managerial, organizational and planning skills, which enhanced her ability to work independently. Because WISE has a small staff, Rosa did not work as part of a team, but rather, she got the opportunity to work with people from various ethnic backgrounds and enhance her experience in the analysis of public issues related with immigrant populations, particularly building community capacity and women's leadership.
