Started in 1985, the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) was the first and remains the only feminist advocacy organization in Singapore. Their mission is to promote gender equity and they work on a wide range of issues, including violence against women, the population policies, and financial education. They provide support groups and services and conduct research for educational forums and conferences.

Stephanie acted as an advocate, assisted battered women's support groups, and conducted research for educational forums and conferences relating to the UN's International Year of the Family. She analyzed the data from Aware's helpline calls.

Chie collected data on violence against women and children in Singapore. She designed a template and went through newspaper articles to study the nature of violence and profiles of victims and perpetrators for the period of four years. She collected data such as ages, occupations, sentences, and protection orders. She also participated a brainstorming meeting with an advertising agency for Aware's public education campaign, attended board meetings, and public forums. She took an independent study to work on the analysis of data upon her return to the Humphrey School. Read her fellowship report at the Human Rights Center's website.

The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women is an international feminist human rights nongovernmental organization network that works internationally to oppose all forms of sexual exploitation. Their philosophy is that sexual exploitation--especially prostitution and trafficking-- violates women's human rights and is a severe form of discrimination. They have offices in several regions, including the United States, Asia Pacific, Norway, and Australia.

Kaoru conducted research on the sex tourism in Cebu, Philippines. She interviewed government officials, NGOs, and women in prostitution. She learned how to talk to women in prostitution by regularly accompanying local NGO staff to meetings with streetworkers in Manila. Her paper was presented in a conference on prostitution. She also studied the activism of local NGOs and expanded a network in the Philippines.

GABRIELA stands for General Assembly Binding Women for Reforms, Integrity, Equality, Leadership and Action. GABRIELA is a national coalition of more than 100 women's organizations in the Philippines, established in 1986. GABRIELA is dedicated to promote women's rights, gender equality, and welfare. It plays a central role in the progressive women's movement in the Philippines. Their tasks and services are carried out through five commissions, including the GABRIELA Commission on Women's Health & Reproductive Rights (GCWHRR). GCHRR's missions are: 1) to develop women's rights to self-determination with regards to their own bodies; 2) to develop women's equal participation within families, communities, and society; and 3) to address socio-economic and political conditions which affect women's health. Their strategy is community based organizing. They believe that women's devastating health situations in the marginalized community would not be improved unless women themselves take initiatives. They also raise consciousness among women and empower them through education so that they can act to solve various issues.

Akemi served as a research assistant for the project, "Family Planning Programs and Strategies, Women's Choices and Alternatives." Her responsibility was to evaluate women-centered clinics based on users' perspectives. The project included to establish and develop gender sensitive criteria for evaluation of family planning programs. She was assigned to a clinic in Apelo, Pasay City, one of the two GCWHRR's clinics in urban poor communities. She observed their clinical services, community education activities, and the living and health conditions. She accompanied with community health workers for home visits. She conducted interviews with 45 people and data analysis of personal and health records. Upon returning to the Humphrey School, she took an independent study to finish her report. She also started to work with a community health group in Minneapolis.

Noriko evaluated the women-centered clinics and their educational activities at the GCWHRR main office and in an urban poor community. She reviewed and identified missions, objectives and activities of GCWHRR. She conducted interviews with service providers and recipients. She analyzed the data she collected from the interviews. Upon her return to the Humphrey School, she took independent study and wrote a final report.

The International Women's Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific (IWRAW-AP) is an autonomous regional non-governmental organization based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which works through collaborative projects in order to achieve its long-term goal of domestic application of international human rights norms to promote women's rights.

Johanna assisted the Working Group on Women's Rights. She helped investigate the prevalence of domestic violence, rape, and sexual exploitation among Cambodian women. The findings of this research were later used to advocate for laws protecting women against all forms of violence and promoting proper status and services for women at home and at work.

The Shirkat Gah Resource Centre was established in 1975 as a lobbying and consciousness raising group. Later it was expanded to include women's development concerns, networking, income generating projects and non-formal education. It primarily focuses on issues such as violence against women, work, and women's health and the environment.

Thang was assigned to the Education and gender Development Section. She conducted field research on girls' work and girls' education in Vietnam. The research was jointly organized by UNICEF and Ministry of Education in collaboration with Vietnam Women Union. She acted as a team leader for the field trip of five days to the northern highland province. Based on the field study, she produced an analysis report, exploring the association between girls' work and education--the invisibility of girls' work and its impact on their education.
