February 25, Pre-International Women's Day Movie Showing
The Center on Women & Public Policy showed a documentary film as a
pre-event for the Celebration of the International Women's Day. The film,
Breaking the History of Silence: The Women's International War Crimes
Tribunal on Japan's Military Sexual Slavery, documents a revolutionary
tribunal representing people from all across Asia and the power of the
women-centered NGOs and survivors as agents for change. About ten students
from inside and outside the Humphrey School gathered in the Humphrey
Forum and had a lively discussion afterwards.
March 12, International Women's Day
The Center on Women and Public Policy was once again a co-sponsor of The
Tenth Annual International Women's Day Celebration, organized by Minnesota
Advocates for Human Rights, the Human Rights Program at the University
of Minnesota and The Women's Foundation of Minnesota. We helped plan,
promote, and fund the event which included workshops presented by women's
rights scholars, community activists and advocates, highlighting the twelve
areas of concern and strategies for the advancement of women, as articulated
by the United Nations Beijing Declaration Platform for Action. This year
made the Tenth Anniversary of the Forth World Conference on Women in Beijing
and the Day was celebrated in Coffman Memorial Union. Professor Sally
Kenney chaired the panel on "Women in Power and Decision-Making."
Between workshops, participants learned from informational displays from
over forty co-sponsoring community and campus women's organizations, including
the Center on Women & Public Policy table. Approximately 500 people
attended.
March 29 and April 14, Congressional Fellowships on Women & Public
Policy Information Sessions
The Center on Women & Public Policy held two informational sessions
for the Humphrey students interested in the Congressional Fellowships
on Women & Public Policy. Professor Sally Kenney met with interested
students to brief the information. Women's Research & Education Institute
(WREI) awards annual Congressional fellowships to a selected number of
graduate students with a proven commitment to women and public policy.
Several students from the Humphrey School have been awarded the fellowships
and worked on the Capitol Hill for eight months.
