The Area for Science, Technology & Environmental Policy

The Center for Science, Technology & Public Policy supports the area in fostering understanding of the role of science and technology in society, particularly relationships to economic growth, health,
the environment, education, and national security.

Faculty and the Center offer a number of courses in Science, Technology & Environmental Policy and also conduct research workshops, seminars, roundtables and symposia to inform local and national decision-making.

The setting:

Minnesota is home to several of the nation's important high-technology industries, notably medical technology, agribusiness, information technology, and telecommunications. The Twin Cities is listed as one of the top 10 high-tech metro areas in the nation. Minnesota citizens are known nationally for being interested and active in their communities.

In this fertile environment, we are working to build connections among industry, nonprofit groups, government, and citizens. Our Area draws on the diverse strengths and expertise of University faculty members, staff, and students. Activities are designed to be inclusive and interdisciplinary, so that all communities can gain a better understanding of how science and technology shape the world in which we live.

"Scientific discoveries can have epic consequences. It's only prudent that society engage in analysis, debate, and public education before adopting the fruits of the laboratory."
