Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the roundtable is to consider and possibly recommend research and educational/training activities that recognize new concepts (i.e. complexity theory) and management challenges (i.e. dealing with technological change) in the transportation profession and possibly recommend research and educational/training activities that recognize new concepts (i.e. complexity theory) and management challenges (i.e. dealing with technological change) in the transportation profession. Four specific objectives are to:

1) share emerging themes from ongoing research relative to the proposition that transportation systems operate as complex systems

2) obtain researcher reaction and input as to the research implications for examining transportation planning and management practices in transportation

3) address the management and practitioner perspectives of planning transportation systems in the face of uncertainty

4) obtain management and practitioner perspectives on training and research needs to new transportation professionals

To achieve these objectives, roundtable participants will be asked to address these questions:

What conceptual or empirical research is there to suggest that "transportation systems" are more complex today than previously?

Do recent concepts in the management and business literature on "managing complexity" have any lessons for transportation?

How does technology affect the level of planning and operating complexity in transportation systems?

What are the implications for the "new infrastructure professional?"
