Transportation Planning and Management: Dealing with Complexity
A Roundtable Discussion
Tuesday, November 12, 2002
The Humphrey Institute's State and Local Policy Program has been working with the University of Minnesota's ITS Institute to conduct a set of federally sponsored studies along the general theme of how transportation systems can be planned sensitive to an increasingly complex social, political, economic, and technological environment.
On Tuesday, November 12, the Center for Transportation Studies will host Joe Sussman, MIT Professor, as keynote speaker for their 15th anniversary luncheon. As part of this event, we will be conducting an interactive session with Professor Sussman and selected researchers and practitioners to explore in more detail the research and management challenges of managing
transportation in a complex environment.
The Invitational Roundtable will feature researchers working on this general subject, complemented by professionals who will be asked to discuss some of the management challenges inherent in contemporary transportation planning and design. We have deliberately kept the size of the roundtable to approximately 10-15 participants in order to ensure a stimulating yet informal discussion. The objective will be to consider and possibly recommend research and educational/training activities that recognize new concepts (i.e. complexity theory) and management challenges (i.e. dealing with technological change) in the transportation profession.
