Minors

Undergraduate Leadership Minor, College of Education and Human Development

The undergraduate leadership minor is a 16-credit interdisciplinary program that helps students gain understanding and experience in multiple frameworks of leadership. The program develops the leadership and social change skills of undergraduates for their roles as citizens on the University campus and in the larger global community. This minor is a collaborative effort of the college’s Department of Educational Policy and Administration (EdPA), the University’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute, and the Office for Student Affairs. Certificate programs

Certificate in Nonprofit Management, College of Continuing Education

Develop your skills and confidence in effective leadership and management skills, management and financial knowledge, nonprofit governance and organizational strategic planning. This post-baccalaureate certificate consists of 21 credits, seven credits in core courses and 14 credits in electives. Students learn the importance of leadership and communication. Advocacy Leadership for Vital Aging Certificate, College of Continuing Education

The Vital Aging Network is creating a shared vision of communities that are good places for people to grow up and grow old. The Advocacy Leadership Certificate program is open to all who are interested in developing and practicing their leadership skills as advocates for vital aging. The program is designed for a diverse group of 30-35 adult learners of all ages interested in developing leadership strengths to help themselves and their communities. Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA)

The Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) is an all-University applied research and technology center at the University of Minnesota that connects faculty and students with nonprofit organizations, ethnic and racial minority groups, businesses, rural towns, inner-city neighborhoods, suburban communities, local governments, and public institutions in Minnesota. CURA has been helping to bring the resources of higher education institutions to community organizations and public agencies throughout the state for over 35 years.

Management & Technical Assistance Program (MTAP) for Nonprofits

MTAP for Nonprofits is designed to help nonprofit organizations that serve urban communities build capacity and enhance their performance and effectiveness. The program consists of three primary service components: the convening component, the technical assistance component and the executive leadership development component.

Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC)

The Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC) offers students, community partners, faculty, and staff a range of information and resources about service-learning and community involvement. Since 1992, the CCLC staff members have worked with more than 120 faculty members and instructors to support them in offering service-learning courses or options in more than 40 departments and nine colleges on the Twin Cities campus. CCLC also develops partnerships with nonprofits and governmental organizations throughout the Twin Cities to link U of M students to meaningful work in the community at area nonprofits.

University of Minnesota Extension Service

In addition to translating scientific knowledge into useful, practical programs and materials, the Extension Service facilitates learning and developmental processes necessary for change in communities across the state.

These publications include policy research and recommendations for citizens and policymakers related to issues that are critical to the resilience and vitality of Minnesota communities. 

Children, Youth, and Families Consortium (CYFC)

The Children, Youth, and Family Consortium’s website is a bridge to a wide range of information and resources about children and families. It connects research, teaching, policy, and community practice and seeks to advance greater understanding, shared knowledge, and action that are informed and deliberate.

Institute on Race and Poverty

The Institute’s goals are to create scholarship, commentary, and dialogue to increase the understanding and support of those unfairly constrained by race and poverty. Its ultimate goal is to change policies and practices that affect the well being of low-income communities of color. This is not a goal that can be accomplished independently. Thus the Institute collaborates with many advocacy groups and community organizations, national, state and local government officials, as well as religious, philanthropic, and business leaders, and media representatives. Its focus has always been on real issues that affect real people. 

Student Association for Nonprofit Enterprise (SANE)

The Student Association for Nonprofit Enterprise is dedicated to increasing nonprofit business awareness through interactions with the community and the University of Minnesota. SANE’s mission is to:

Women’s Philanthropic Leadership Circle

A dedicated group of alumnae from the college gathered in the fall of 2001 to discuss issues of their leadership and philanthropy. This group has evolved into the Women’s Philanthropic Leadership Circle. Its vision is to bring women together whose gifts, when combined, will make a difference for women and women’s leadership in education. The members of the circle dream of making it possible for women to become philanthropists in ways that make sense for them personally and financially.

Community Partnership with Families (PDF document)

Department of Family Social Science Professor William Doherty conducts research and outreach on community participation models for family professionals. In this article, he develops a model that extends the role of the family professional beyond that of service provider to one of a citizen working with other citizens to produce collective work that is of public value.

Fellowships

The Buckman Fellowship for Leadership in Philanthropy is a program for College of Human Ecology (CHE) faculty, staff, students, and alumni to learn about the world of philanthropy and fundraising. Buckman Fellows, chosen on the basis of their commitment to a specific philanthropy project, participate in a yearlong series of seminars with University and community experts on fundraising. Fellows also are awarded a $1000 stipend to assist in their philanthropy education. The first cohort of Buckman Fellows was selected in the fall of 2003 by the Buckman Advisory Board, which includes Twin Cities philanthropy and fundraising experts, as well as CHE faculty and staff.

Charities Review Council of Minnesota

The council’s mission is to provide tools for donors to make informed giving decisions that help build a stronger nonprofit sector. The council pursues this mission by maintaining Accountability Standards and applying them through reviews; providing information that will help donors make informed charitable giving decisions; and encouraging accountability in the charitable sector.

Foundation Center Cooperating Collection at the Minneapolis Public Library

The Foundation Center Cooperating Collection is an information resource on funding and nonprofit organizations, including foundation funding, corporate funding, government funding, educational financial aid, non-grant fund raising, grantsmanship, international funding, funding for individuals, nonprofit management, and proposal writing. The collection is the largest of its kind in the Upper Midwest. It consists of more than 600 volumes, a dozen magazine titles, 990PFs from all Minnesota private foundations, hundreds of annual reports from Minnesota foundations and nonprofits, and FC Search, a CD-ROM database of U.S. grants and grantmakers.

James J. Hill Library

The James J. Hill Library, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, houses a world-class collection of practical business information resources and is considered one of the most comprehensive business libraries in the country.

Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits (MAP)

MAP provides quality, affordable management and board development services for nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, and religious institutions.

Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, Charities Division

The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office compiles data on nonprofits that solicit donations from the public.

Minnesota Council on Foundations

The council provides news and information on Minnesota grantmaking and philanthropy.

Minnesota Council on Nonprofits

University of Minnesota’s Social Welfare History Archives

Social Welfare History Archives collects, preserves, and makes available the archives of voluntary-sector social service and social reform organizations and the personal papers of individual leaders in the field. Focusing on the late 19th and 20th centuries, the collections include materials from such organizations as the Child Welfare League of America and the Minnesota Charities Review Council.

Volunteer Resource Center

The Volunteer Resource Center matches potential volunteers with opportunities in the Twin Cities area. Urban Institute Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy

The Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy (CNP) explores the role and impact of nonprofit organizations in democratic societies. CNP seeks to develop, maintain, and expand data on nonprofit organizations. Literature of the Nonprofit Sector Online Searchable Database (LNPS)

LNPS Online is a searchable database of the literature of philanthropy. It incorporates the unique contents of the Foundation Center’s five libraries and contains more than 22,250 full bibliographic citations, of which more than 14,800 have descriptive abstracts. It is updated daily.

International Fellows in Philanthropy, the Johns Hopkins University

This fellowship program promotes advanced study, research, and training at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies, Center for Civil Society Studies, for a semester (four months) or a full academic year (nine months), for up to eight persons each year. Program participants are involved in studying or managing private, nonprofit, or philanthropic organizations outside the United States, or serve as government or corporate liaisons to the nonprofit sector.

International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR)

ISTR is a major international association promoting research and education in the fields of philanthropy, civil society, and the nonprofit sector. Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe

The trust was formed in June 2000 by an unprecedented consortium of private grantmaking foundations as an independent, public charity incorporated under the laws of the United States of America. Currently, endowing foundations include the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Open Society Institute, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The purpose of the trust is to support the development and long-term stabilization of civil society in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
