"Leadership: Strengthening Organizations and Communities"

A day-long conference sponsored by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and the Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center.

This conference is designed for nonprofit leaders (staff members, board members, volunteers) and those interested in nonprofit leadership at any stage - emerging, mid-career, and established - and in any role within an organization.  The conference includes a unique mix of plenary and breakout sessions as well as an opportunity for participants to define and dialogue about critical leadership issues.

Full and partial scholarships are available for student and nonprofits with budgets under $250,000.  For more information, go to the website of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits or email pnlc@umn.edu.

 

Past events

The PNLC, in collaboration with the Association of Minnesota Counties, the League of Minnesota Cities, and the Minnesota School Boards Association, hosted the third annual Local Government Innovation Awards on Monday, April 21. The awards program recognizes outstanding cities, counties, and public schools that have used inventive practices to improve local services.

The PNLC co-sponsored a brownbag discussion about nonprofit mergers April 3. Staff members from Project ReDesign, a pilot project at MAP for Nonprofits, spoke about their efforts to counsel nonprofit organizations considering a merger.

The PNLC hosted a panel discussion of the “Opportunities and Challenges of Nonprofit Advocacy,” March 13. The discussion offered a broad national view of nonprofit organizations and a local analysis of the advocacy being done by nonprofits throughout Minnesota. Panelists included leading academic Jeff Berry, Tufts University; Marcia Avner, director of public policy for the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits; and Susie Brown, public policy director at Family and Children’s Service.

Chuck Denny, Hill Fellow, and the PNLC hosted an event on February 28 for students from the Carlson School of Management and Humphrey Institute.  Using a Wal-Mart case study, Denny led a discussion on the role of the corporation in modern society.

Peggy Leppik, a current Metropolitan Council Member with over 25 years of public and nonprofit experience, spoke with students regarding her experiences in government on October 11, 2007.

The PNLC hosted Ken Meier, one of today’s most influential research authorities on public management.  Meier presented “Evidence Based Public Management: The Results of a Research Agenda" on Thursday, September 27, 2007.

The PNLC co-sponsored its second annual conference with Minnesota Council of Nonprofits focused on Network Leadership on August 6, 2007, at the U's McNamara Center. Over 300 nonprofit professionals attended, exploring individual, organizational, and community leadership from a network-building perspective.

"Promoting Excellence in Public Management: Innovations in Cities and Counties"

This free half-day conference sponsored by the Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center (PNLC), the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance (CSPG).
Time: 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Location: Cowles Auditorium at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, Minneapolis.
Co-sponsors: Citizens League, the League of Minnesota Cities, and the Association of Minnesota Counties.

PNLC Speaker Series: "A New Model to Value and Finance Non-Profits."  Guest lecture by Steven M. Rothschild

Steven M. Rothschild, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Twin Cities RISE! (TCR!) described some of the challenges facing nonprofits in an era of continued government cuts on social spending, and offered a new model for financing nonprofits.

The 2005-2006 Fellowship Symposium for the Louis W. Hill, Jr. Fellowship in Philanthropy, with Fellows Sage and John Cowles, was held on Tuesday April 4, 2006. Both Fellows presented their individual papers and answered questions from the audience. The program was followed by a reception in the Humphrey Institute Atrium. Leadership and Management Academy for members of the Association of Minnesota Building Officials (AMBO)

Coordinated by Associate Dean John Bryson, a nationally recognized expert in strategic planning, in close coordination with the Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center, the Humphrey Institute offered a Leadership and Management Academy to members of the Association of Minnesota Building Officials (AMBO) from February 6-10, 2006. The program of ten half-day professional development workshops in public sector administration was open to all. Participants who completed all ten workshops received a certificate signifying their completion of this unique program.

Serving Citizens Better: Promoting Excellence in Public Management

On January 27, 2006, the Humphrey Institute hosted a major national conference that brought together national experts, the Governor’s office, state legislators, and the Citizens League to discuss the best practices around the country and the steps we can take in Minnesota to improve government performance. The conference had been organized by the Humphrey Institute’s Center for the Study of Politics and Governance (CSPG) and co-sponsored by the Institute’s Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center and the Citizens League.

“The Challenge of Recovering the Public Sector for a Better Society.”  Guest Lecturer: Michael Lipsky.

The Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center and the Center on Study of Politics and Governance hosted a lecture by Michael Lipsky, a senior Program Director with Demos, a non-partisan research think tank in New York.  He is also a visiting professor at the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute. Mr. Lipsky is the author of five books, including the award-winning Street-Level Bureaucracy, and with S.R. Smith, Nonprofits for Hire: The Welfare State in the Age of Contracting.

PNLC Speaker Series:  An informal talk with this year’s Hill Fellows, Sage & John Cowles

The Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center hosted an informal talk with this year’s Louis W. Hill, Jr. fellows in Philanthropy, Sage and John Cowles, on Wednesday January 25, at 4 p.m. in the Freeman Commons (HHH 205). Sage and John Cowles spoke about their respective projects.

During her fellowship term Sage Cowles considered the essential factors in the development of an individual’s engagement with his or her community—the fundamental issues in giving and volunteering. John Cowlesis considered some changes in standards of structure, operation and performance of certain nonprofits and foundations, coupled with some adjustment of the roles played by nonprofit elements in the American polity.
