Carlson School of Management

"We are living in an information rich, instantaneous, borderless time...the rate of change over the next 25 years will be four times what it is today. Leadership is a bigger challenge than ever before. Real leadership is not about prestige, power or status.
It's about responsibility."

Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Carlson Companies

“…there is a synergy when researchers, their ideas and teams work together; innovation is most often achieved when ideas and objects/tools are brought together in novel ways as never before.”

Massoud Amin, Professor, University of Minnesota

Join us at the University of Minnesota from Sunday, October 5, to October 7, 2008 for a unique research and practice symposium, Integrative Leadership: Crossing Boundaries for the Common Good. Top academic researchers will convene with proven executives from business, government and civil society sectors to explore the concept and practical implications of leading individuals and organizations across sectors to address issues of local and global importance in the 21st century.

Confirmed speakers include Carlson Companies Chair Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Bush Foundation President Peter Hutchinson, University of Michigan Ross Business School Professor Noel Tichy, Mediators Foundation President Mark Gerzon, Social Ventures Partners Minnesota Executive Director Brad Brown, Citizens League President Sean Kershaw, Thunderbird Global Management Professor Mansour Javidan, and University of Minnesota Professors Joyce Bono, Barbara Crosby, Paul Vaaler, John Bryson, and Karen Seashore.

The symposium presents a mix of topics and interactive presentational formats for attendees. Come to the pre-symposium reception and interview of Mansour Javidan on cross-cultural leadership in a global economy. Join a group discussing the latest academic research on integrative leadership attributes and behaviors. Attend the plenary presentation by Mark Gerzon to find out what “Global Intelligence” is and why it matters for resolving inter-organizational and international conflicts. Discuss with a panel of academics and executives how leaders can deal with challenges ranging from climate change to changing demography in the local workforce.

Join university students, faculty, and administrators, government and non-profit organization professionals, business executives and community members looking for state-of-the-art research, and lively discussion and debate on the concept and practice of integrative leadership, locally and globally. Meet, interact, teach, and learn from each other about what integrative leadership is and how it can make a difference.

Joyce Bono, director of the University of Minnesota’s Leadership Lab, has found that leadership isn’t just do-goodism, it’s a management strategy for enhancing effectiveness.
