I manage all aspects of career services and collaborate with student services, alumni relations, development, and many other partners to serve our students from first contact to graduation and beyond. Over the last 25 years, we have built a wide range of programs, services, and events to support students and alumni in developing their public service careers. Those include a popular mentor program, a course in career development, substantial career resources on the website, on-campus employer visits and career fairs, and a career exploration of Washington, D.C., as well as individual career counseling services. I developed my own work in career counseling after getting graduate degrees in political science, with a focus on comparative policy and public policy, and teaching in a community college. I found my greatest satisfaction in academic advising and developed an internship program and a career services office as part of my initial role in student services at the Humphrey School, which led to my current role as director.

Being able to meet with our talented and inspiring students for all kinds of career reasons, including making professional connections, determining career focus, interview coaching, resume reviewing, and job search brainstorming, is why I am in this field. I also teach the career development class with Lynne, develop and present webinars, monitor the internship paperwork for our MPP and MURP students, and co-lead the Washington, D.C., career exploration trip. I came to career counseling work after 24 years as a manager and director of IT and have a master's degree in counseling psychology. My IT background has allowed me to be of service in representing career and alumni services in the improvement of functionality in our student-alumni database—a key tool in staying in touch with our alumni and connecting our students to alumni.

Connecting our students and alumni with employers that want to hire them brings a great deal of satisfaction to my professional life and is why I've been doing this at Humphrey for 14 years. I manage on-campus recruiting efforts at the School, our job/internship posting system, and Career and Employer Services' social media groups on Facebook and on LinkedIn. Along with Lynne Schuman, I coordinate the alumni mentor program. The mentor program, now in its 25th year, is one of the longest running mentor programs on campus and has matched hundreds of students with alumni for professional networking.
