Career Planning

A student meets with an advisor

The Office of Career and Student Success helps students and alumni find meaningful work. Whether you want to launch a career in Washington, DC, Minnesota, or elsewhere around the country or the world, we match your passion and areas of study with a variety of employers, including government agencies, nonprofits, and businesses.

Through individual consulting, workshops, resources, and more, we'll help you discover the wide world of public service careers and provide you with the tools you need to manage your career search. Our extensive career resources include:

  • Domestic and global mentor programs
  • Annual career exploration trips to Washington, DC, and Chicago
  • Internships
  • Individualized counseling

Career and Student Success is unique in that we continue to provide support long after graduation, throughout our graduates’ careers. Whether you are a recent graduate or a longer-term alum making a career change or looking for new ideas or job resources, we are here to help. Our staff also are eager to connect employers to the Humphrey School's outstanding students.

Career Appointments

As a current student, you have the opportunity to meet with Humphrey School Career and Student Success staff, who can help you navigate your career path. Topics include career exploration, application materials (resumes, cover letters, references), interviewing (virtually and in person), job search strategies, networking and LinkedIn, and internships.

Due to our operations moving online during the COVID-19 situation, we will be conducting appointments virtually. You'll receive information on how to participate in a Zoom session or dial-in information.

To make an appointment, visit our staff page.

Internships

Internships provide opportunities to gain professional experience, try out the skills you learn in the classroom, and develop a professional network. While only the Master of Public Policy (MPP) and Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) degrees require a noncredit internship, all Humphrey students can benefit from an internship. More information on internships can be found here.
