University of Minnesota Fellowship Opportunities

NEW! Veterans Internship Grant Program
Purpose: To recognize the University’s support of student veterans, a financial grant from the Walmart Foundation will be used to fund internships for student veterans and service members for 2009–2010. Internship grants (in varying amounts up to a maximum of $1,800) will be awarded each term (fall 2009, spring 2010, May/summer 2010) to qualified applicants. Grant preference will be given to students engaged in unpaid internships, although paid internships that pay less than $1,800 throughout the semester will also be considered.
Eligibility: 1) Admitted, degree-seeking undergraduates or graduate/professional students in any college or program at a University of Minnesota campus. 2) Current members of the military who have completed initial training or veterans as defined by the state of Minnesota. 3) Engaged in the majority of internship hours for the semester in which they are applying for the grant.

Hsiao Scholarship

Award: between $200 and $500
Eligibility: This scholarship provides opportunities for University of Minnesota students to incorporate in their graduate program an educational, internship or research experience in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Macau. Applicants must have a strong record of academic achievement, and strong motivation and potential for independent accomplishment in his/her chosen field.

Red Pockets Scholarship
Award: between $250 and $1,500
Eligibility: The scholarship provides opportunities for University of Minnesota students to incorporate educational or research experience in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau as part of their academic studies, internships, research, or professional training. Applicant must be in good academic standing, with a GAP of at least 3.5, with potential in their field. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.

University of Minnesota, Graduate School: Fellowships for Research Abroad
The Graduate Fellowship Office processes applications and, when appropriate, conducts interviews for several competitions for graduate study abroad and research fellowships, including Fulbright Program, German Academic Exchange Service, and Luce Scholars Program (one-year internship in Asia).

Guidelines and Application
Award: Boren Fellowships provide support for overseas or domestic study, or a combination of both. The minimum period of support is one academic semester. The maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000 over 24 months. Actual support levels will be determined by each individual project budget and the length of the project. Boren funding can begin no earlier than May 15, 2009.
Eligibility: The purpose of the Boren Fellowship is to promote the study of under-represented languages and areas critical to U.S. national security in countries other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Fellowships are also available for domestic internships.
