Successful Mentoring EventsThe Humphrey School Alumni Society has sponsored a mentoring program since 1987, connecting hundreds of Humphrey students with alumni who share their professional interests to build career knowledge and create professional connections. This year offered students and mentors many opportunities to interact with and learn from one another. February 11 marked “Humphrey Day at the Capitol” in St. Paul. Students toured the building and heard from elected officials who graduated from the Institute, including Paul Gardner (MA ’96), Nora SlaUwik (MPA ’05), and Patricia Torres Ray (MPA ’02). They also were offered the chance to hear from alumni who work as staff for the legislature, including Deborah Junod (Policy Fellow '07), Tom Lehman (MA ’82), and Nina Manzi (MA ’85). |

Announcements
D.C. alumni will meet in July at Iron Gate in DuPont Circle. More details to come. Thanks to the work of the alumni board representatives, D.C. alumni will convene quarterly networking events in fall. Kiyoshi Nakasaka (MA '89) will host the first of these at WashingtonCORE in September. More than100 have applied for the new Master of Development Practice (MDP), which will welcome its first cohort in the fall. The MDP degree is unlike other programs across the country and has generated interest from around the world. Job and internship opportunities are on the rise, thanks in large part to the help of Institute alumni. Forty-three jobs were posted in November 2008. By November 2009, this number jumped to 131. Internships saw a similar trend, increasing from 199 to 380 in the same time period. These opporunities are especially important for students and new graduates in our current economic climate. PASA offered a successful career engagement fair, with the help of many alumni. Nearly 40 government agencies, nonprofits, and private firms joined students for three hours, connecting students and recent graduates to interesting organizations in the policy community. The Policy Fellows program seeks applicants for the 2010–2011 cohort. This nine-month professional development program brings together emerging and mid-career leaders from the business, nonprofit, and government sectors to hone their public affairs leadership skills and work toward the common good.
