Minnesota alumni event
Join us for "The Theater of Security," a lecture by Bruce Schneier, author of Beyond Fear: Thinking Sensibly about Security in an Uncertain World, in conjunction with Picturing Power, an exhibition by Paul Schambroom.
Thursday, March 27, 2008
7-9 p.m.
Weisman Art Museum
Shepherd Room
Free program followed by reception. See you there!
Security is not mysterious, Bruce Schneier advises, and contrary to popular belief, it is not hard. In this program, security expert Bruce Schneier helps separate "security theater," or a fictive performance of safety and prevention, from its actual and effective workings. Schneier is one of the foremost experts on issues and tactics of security, from preventing computer hacking to terrorist attacks. Based in the Twin Cities, Schneier speaks across the nation on these issues, has testified before Congress, and regularly writes opinion pieces for Forbes, Salon, Wired News, and the Star Tribune.
This program is cosponsored by the University of Minnesota's Weisman Art Museum.

Annual Alumni Tuition Grant Program Giving is Wrapping Up
Misty Heggeness (MPP '00) and Chuck Johnson (MA '83)
Times are changing, tuition costs are rising, and budgets are tight everywhere. Even though times are difficult for everyone, our current economic environment causes more stress on those with fewer resources--this includes current Humphrey students. The Humphrey alumni board is currently campaigning to raise funds for our Alumni Tuition Grant Program, and we need your help!
When the program began, tuition costs were less than $4,000. The ATGP fund was created to fully fund second year students. Today, tuition rates and fees have skyrocketed to over $13,000, but our annual giving has not kept pace. The ATGP fund has only increased 60%, while student costs are now 250% higher and rising. We currently only fund an average of $2,500 for second year student recipients. As tuition rates continue to increase, we struggle to improve our alumni annual giving to keep pace.
You can help. With current economic times as they are, it's even more important to give today. The campaign wraps up on March 31, 2008, so there's no time to delay. If you have made a gift this year--thank you! If not, please click on the following link and give the future of a planning or policy analyst a chance to follow in your footsteps. Please give today!

The award is presented each year at commencement and features a $500 monetary prize. If you wish to contribute to this fund, please visit this site to make a gift. Good News for MA/MPP Alumni...Especially Those Seeking a Career Change
from Scott Talan, MPA, of National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NAASPA) www.naspaa.org
You have your MA/MPP degree and are likely fully into your career and work. But perhaps your current job isn't all you expected? Or it's time to move on. If so, are you tired of looking on monstrous job sites with 1000s of generic jobs but few that are just right for you? You are not alone. That's why we created www.publicservicecareers.org.
The top three names in public service education just created this first nationwide public and nonprofit sector job site for you.
The site was built by and for MAs and MPPs. The new site just launched and already there are more than 250 job postings for which people are already applying, interviewing, and accepting jobs. Whether you want to work for the Gates Foundation, Booz Allen Hamilton Consulting, the City of Miami, the National Bureau of Economic Research, state government, a nonprofit organization, or a college or university, this site may have the perfect job and career match for you. Best of all, it's free to use.
We want employers to see qualified job-seekers and are asking you to register and use the site so they can search and find the talent they need. If you do the following three things, you'll be ahead of your competition and ready for employers.
What do you need to do?
1. Create a profile (with job alerts tailored to your career interests!)
2. Post your resume (it's confidential so you can 'unofficially' search for a job)
3. Search and browse positions already listed, as your job may already be waiting
We plan to attract even more employers in 2008. This is why we're inviting you to get signed up right now. You will have a leg up and be ready for job openings.
Our job site is dedicated to public service and you, but it has more than jobs. Check out the 'Career Advice' section that has public sector career tips, job hints, video, Q&A sessions, and more.
Visit www.publicservicecareers.org and get started today!
