MENTOR PROGRAM

The Humphrey Institute Alumni Association has sponsored a mentoring program since 1987, connecting Humphrey students with alumni who share their professional interests.    Since then we have matched hundreds of students and alumni to build career knowledge and create professional connections.  The mentors benefit as much as the students, reconnecting to fellow alumni and to the Institute.  Mentors also find students a source of energy and enthusiasm; students and mentors have often become long-term colleagues as the students graduate and enter public service careers.

The original Alumni Mentor Program has developed into two distinct programs to serve different student populations:

The Domestic Mentor Program: one-on-one matches between students (primarily first year) and Minnesota alumni and other professionals in the students’ areas of interest.  This program serves students in all Humphrey degree programs who are interested in domestic policy/planning issues.  The Domestic Mentor Program begins with the orientations for students and mentors in September and the kick-off events (where mentors and students meet) in October.  The program runs through the academic year, ending in May.  For application instructions and forms, visit the Domestic Mentor Program web site.

Global Connections: this program is currently being redesigned to better integrate global networking into the Humphrey Institute’s many international initiatives.  Please check this webpage in early fall for a full description of a networking program that will connect students who have international policy interests with professionals who have international experience. This will replace the Global Mentor Program.

Additional networking resources: To assist students to develop additional professional contacts, both within and outside Minnesota, the Office of Career Services provides appropriate alumni contacts as requested.   Make an appointment with either Lynne Schuman or Martha Krohn on our online appointment system at www.hhh.umn.edu/career (click on MAKE AN APPOINTMENT) to discuss networking contacts and strategies.
