Hubert H Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs Alumni Board of Directors Description of Responsibilities and Expectations for Officers and Members of the Board

Board Member's Roles

A member of the Board of Directors assumes these responsibilities:
  • Attendance and participation at all scheduled alumni board and committee meetings
  • Attend alumni board sponsored or hosted events
  • Give at a meaningful level to the Humphrey Alumni Scholarship

Officers and Representative

President: The President assumes overall leadership of the Alumni Board and has the primary responsibility for the relationship between the alumni and the Institute. The President also assumes the leadership in the development of the alumni association structure. The President shall schedule and chair regular meetings of the Board and shall appoint members to the various committees of the Board. The term of the President shall be one year.

President-Elect: The President-Elect assists the President as requested, including scheduling and chairing meetings in the absence of the President and will assume the office of President after one year. The President-Elect has primary responsibility for the development of alumni membership, including professional development, working with at-large groups of alumni, and facilitating professional networking among alumni.

Representative to the Minnesota Alumni Association: The UMAA Representative is selected by the Board to serve as the Humphrey Alumni's member of the National Board of Trustees of the larger organization. The UMAA Representative is responsible for representing Institute alumni interests on the UMAA Board and reporting the issues and concerns of the UMAA back to the Humphrey Alumni Board. He or she facilitates communications between the two groups and otherwise fulfills all the obligations of a national board member.

Representative to the Dean's Advisory Council: The Advisory Council Representative is selected jointly by the Advisory Council and the Alumni Board Nominating committees to serve as a member of both groups. The Advisory Council Representative is responsible for representing Institute alumni interests on the Dean's Advisory Council and reporting the issues and concerns of the Advisory Council back to the Alumni Board. He or she facilitates communications between the two groups and otherwise fulfills all the obligations of a Dean's Advisory Council member.

Staff: The staff of the Alumni Association is provided by the Humphrey Institute and consists of the Alumni Relations & Annual Fund manager. This position provides support for the alumni database and mailings. The staff coordinates meetings, programs and fund-raising; takes minutes; conducts mailings; serves as a communications center for the Association; and provides other support as requested.

At-Large Board Member

Mission: The Alumni Association of the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs organizes events and sponsors actions that allow alumni to benefit personally, intellectually and professionally through involvement with current students and in the programs and activities of the Institute and within the larger University of Minnesota structure through the University Alumni Association.

Purpose: At-Large board members serve the Association by representing Humphrey Institute alumni who are based outside the Twin Cities and Washington, D.C. areas. They offer a perspective about alumni service and relations that is distinct from other board members who live and work in areas where there are large concentrations of Humphrey Institute alumni.

Function: At-Large board members board members function as full members of the board, serving on committees, participating in board meetings and executing special project assignments. These critical functions are summarized below:

Tenure: All board members are elected to two year terms. Members may serve a maximum of three consecutive terms.

Washington, D.C. Representative

Mission: The Alumni Society of the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs organizes events and sponsors actions that allow alumni to benefit personally, intellectually and professionally through involvement with current students and in the programs and activities of the Institute and within the larger University of Minnesota structure through the University Alumni Association.

Purpose: Washington, D.C. board representatives serve the Association by representing Humphrey Institute alumni who are based in the Washington, D.C. area.

Function: Washington, D.C. board members function as full members of the board, serving on committees, participating in board meetings and executing special project assignments. These functions are summarized below:

Tenure: All board members are elected to two year terms. Members may serve a maximum of three consecutive terms.
