Certificate in Public Affairs Leadership FAQ

Scan the questions and answers below for more specific information about the Certificate in Public Affairs Leadership.

What are the meeting dates of the hybrid (online and classroom) option?

The meeting schedule for the 2011-2012 academic year is as follows:

Introductory Week:

  • August 15-19

Weekend Sessions:

  • September 16–17
  • October 14–15
  • November 11–12
  • December 9–10
  • January 13–14
  • February 17–18
  • March 16–17
  • April 13–14

What is the workload like?
Although the time in the classroom will be less frequent, we expect the workload to be similar to traditional course sections because you will 'stay connected' to others through on-line chats, assignments, readings, and discussions.  The typical estimate is 2 to 3 hours of work per credit per week.  The amount of work likely will be more some weeks and less other weeks.

How many students will there be in the hybrid courses?
The hybrid course section will be limited to 25 students.

If we are spread out across the state, how will we communicate and work with each other between classroom sessions?
You will access materials, connect with each other, and submit and receive feedback on assignments through a course website.  You will use and learn technology tools that are transforming work and the policy making process today.

I'm not a technology or computer expert. How will I be able to learn and use the technology tools required by these courses?
During the August session, we will provide an orientation to the course webpage and the technology tools you need. All are easy to use, and you will receive additional support from staff and teaching assistants if needed.

Will accommodation or transportation be provided?
Transportation and accommodation are not included in the cost of the program. We have reserved a block rooms at a reduced fee at a nearby hotel for participants to use at their own expense. Details on reserving these rooms will be forthcoming.

What are the costs?
The tuition will match that of the Master of Public Affairs degree at $938 per credit for Minnesota residents and $1,529 for out of state residents for the 2009–2010 academic year (tuition for 2010-2011 will be set in July). As of June 2010, the Humphrey School still is determining which fees will apply to students in the certificate program. Minnesota residents should expect to pay about $13,000 for the 12-credit program, while out of state residents should expect to pay about $20,600.

How do I register and pay for courses?
You will register and pay for 6 credits each semester. Detailed registration instructions will be e-mailed to you upon notification of admission to pursue the certificate.

Can I continue on for the MPA degree?
Yes, credits from the Certificate in Public Affairs Leadership can be applied toward the mid-career Master of Public Affairs degree.

Can I take the classes in the weekly, classroom-based format instead?
Yes, the certificate may be completed through either the hybrid or the classroom-based courses.

Why is the certificate so expensive? Isn't online education cheaper?
The certificate isn't an online program, but a hybrid course. It combines the best of face-to-face and web-based learning. Designing and delivering a quality educational experience does not cost less. The same Humphrey School faculty members who teach the Institute's classroom-based courses are designed and teach these courses. The integrated form of this course actually will be more like a high-quality, professional executive education experience.
