ABOUT THE TWIN CITIES

Photo of Lake CalhounThe vibrant Minneapolis-St. Paul area is the entertainment and cultural center of the upper Midwest and has a long history of innovation in politics and government. The scenery of this attractive metropolis includes contemporary skylines, historic architecture, and greenways of parks, lakes, and the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers.

The Twin Cities is noted for its array of intriguing theater, fine orchestras, art museums, and a sculpture garden. Interesting museums, professional sports, riverboats, and a variety of nightspots add to the appeal of the Twin Cities. Along the Mississippi riverfront in Minneapolis are historic mills, the 1883 Stone Arch Bridge, and scenic walkways. Downtown St. Paul is home to the Minnesota Children's Museum, the Science Museum of Minnesota, and the Minnesota History Center.

With Mall of America in Bloomington, the Twin Cities has become an international shopping destination. The Mall is the largest shopping and entertainment complex in the U.S. The Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis is another favorite with shoppers, with an eclectic mix of shops and galleries.

Minneapolis has regained its spot on the top of the 2007 list of America's most literate cities. Read more.

But what about the weather?

Worried about the cold and snow? Did you know that, typically, the first measurable snowfall in Minnesota isn’t until November 6? October usually brings crisp air, fresh apples, and changing leaf colors. The average daytime temperature in late October is 58 degrees; nightly lows average 39 degrees. Check current weather conditions.

Cultural Attractions and Destinations

The Twin Cities metropolitan area is second only to New York City for theatre seats per capita. Many celebrated stages are located in or near downtown Minneapolis. Visitors also will enjoy the many museums and cultural institutions found in the Twin Cities. And has anyone heard of Mall of America? That’s here too.

The Great Outdoors

The 18th largest metropolitan area in the country, the Twin Cities boast hundreds of acres of green space. Minneapolis alone offers 22 lakes, 100 golf courses, and almost 200 acres of parkland—all within the city limits.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board offers information on the beautiful sites to visit while you’re here.
